Sen. Lamar Alexander has added his voice to the chorus of lawmakers calling on Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to resign over the disastrous rollout of the Obamacare website.
"At some point there has to be accountability," Alexander, the ranking member on the Upper Chamber's Health Committee, said on the floor of the Senate. "Expecting this secretary to be able to fix what she has not been able to fix during the last three and one half years is unrealistic.
"It is throwing good money after bad," he said, according to a Politico report.
Alexander, a former governor and Cabinet secretary, is one of the highest ranking Republicans to call for Sebelius' ouster, and his announcement could persuade other GOP legislators to do the same.
"It is time for her to resign and for someone else to take charge," he asserted. "No private sector chief executive officer would escape accountability after such a poor performance. And the principle of accountability is not foreign to the public sector."
Alexander's remarks came shortly before Sebelius told the House Energy and Commerce Committee that the American people "deserve better."
During her testimony on Wednesday, Sebelius said, "Access to Healthcare.gov. has been a miserably frustrating experience for way too many Americans," reports Fox News.
To the American people, she said, "You deserve better. I apologize. I'm accountable to you for fixing these problems."
Sebelius' appearance is the first time she has testified before Congress since the launch of the exchange websites on Oct. 1.
Her testimony came as the data hub experienced another outage.
"The news seems to get worse by the day," GOP Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan, chairman of the committee that is grilling Sebelius, said at the start of the hearing.
