The Alexander for Senate campaign today announced that Senator Angus King (I-Maine) is endorsing Lamar Alexander's re-election.

Alexander said: "I appreciate the endorsement of Senator King. As a conservative senator who focuses not just on making a speech but also getting a result, I am glad to have the support of an independent like Senator King who has a reputation of doing the same.

King said: "Senator Alexander is the kind of person who we absolutely need in the United States Senate. He is someone who listens, and who is interested in solving problems."

Both Alexander and King are former governors. In 2013, when student loan interest rates doubled, they helped pass into law legislation that brought those rates back down and tied them to the market, making them more affordable to students and fairer to taxpayers.

Alexander has also received a range of other endorsements, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former head of the American Conservative Union Al Cardenas, and former Ronald Reagan economist Art Laffer.

King made his endorsement while speaking to reporters following a higher education roundtable on simplifying the student financial aid process. The event was held at Lipscomb University in Nashville.
