General Carl Stiner to chair group supporting Lamar Alexander's re-election to U.S. Senate
The Alexander for Senate campaign today announced "Veterans for Alexander," a group of veterans from across Tennessee who support Lamar Alexander's campaign for re-election. Gen. Carl Stiner, a retired four-star general in the U.S. Army, will serve as chairman of the group.
Alexander said, "We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude we couldn't possibly repay, and I've fought to make that clear in the U.S. Senate. I am honored to have the support of so many Tennesseans who have worn the uniform of our Armed Services and helped protect our freedoms."
General Stiner said, "Senator Alexander has always stood up for Tennessee veterans and military families, and I'm proud to stand up for Senator Alexander by chairing his 'Veterans for Alexander' coalition in support of his re-election campaign."
When the crisis over care for veterans through the U.S. Department ofVeterans Affairs came to light in May, Alexander called for an immediate investigation. He also cosponsored and helped pass into law legislation that gives veterans the same kinds of choices for their health care that they have for higher education. Veterans now have the choice to receive health care from private providers if they are not able to get an appointment at a VA facility in a reasonable amount of time or live more than 40 miles away from a VA medical facility.
Alexander has also consistently voted to support veterans. He voted against the 2013 federal budget agreement specifically because it cut military pension benefits, and he voted in favor of legislation that later restored those pension benefits.
